Beach weather has settled across much of southern and eastern Spain this week, with sunshine, warm temperatures and calm conditions expected to continue across many of the country’s most popular coastal areas.
From the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca to Murcia, Almeria and the Balearic Islands, residents and holidaymakers can expect the kind of classic June weather that brings packed terraces, busy beaches and comfortable evenings outdoors. Temperatures are sitting in what many consider the ideal range, warm enough for the beach without the intense midsummer heat that often arrives later in the season.
Current three day outlook
Daytime highs in the Costa del Sol near Malaga should hit 26ºC or 27ºC on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Early cloud will likely clear to leave plenty of sun. Almeria and Murcia are due to see similar or a touch warmer between 27ºC and 30ºC in places. Costa Blanca around Alicante will enjoy highs in the upper 20s under blue skies. Balearic spots like Mallorca and Ibiza are set to reach 26ºC to 28ºC with a fresh northeast breeze. Rain is likely to keep well away from all these areas.
Cold Blob and AMOC slowdown in simple terms
A cooler area of ocean water south of Greenland has caught attention online recently. Many are linking this cold blob to a slowdown in the big Atlantic current known as AMOC. According to Meteored, Greenland ice melt run-off is making surface sea water less dense so it sinks less easily. If AMOC were to slow down dramatically or collapse, models suggest much cooler conditions across parts of Europe. For Spain that drop might average two to four degrees, stronger towards the north and west.
Mediterranean areas and the south, however, would notice it less. Wetter weather could arrive more often as the jet stream moves south. It would develop slowly over time with no sudden freeze like in disaster movies, no matter what is being said on social media.
Reassuring picture for now
June weather in these coastal zones is still the best and will stay nicely warm and bright. Sea conditions suit swimming with water temperatures around 20ºC. Beachgoers can enjoy outdoor plans without weather worries in the short term. Any bigger climate shifts from ocean currents lie well into the future based on expert views. Any bigger climate shifts linked to ocean currents remain long term discussions for now, while Spain’s coastal areas continue to enjoy classic early summer conditions.
