Jaen activated a pre-emergency phase on Tuesday afternoon, June 16, after a sudden downpour dumped more than 30 litres of rain in just 20 minutes across the city. No injuries were reported, thankfully, yet streets, basements and garages suffered major flooding.

Jaen Council responds to widespread water damage

Emergency teams including firefighters, local police and civil protection handled 110 calls reporting water entering homes, businesses and entrances. The Constitution parking facility saw all levels submerged, leading managers to seal off the site completely. Power supplies dropped in multiple districts, with the responsible company racing to restore service.

Crews also tackled a transformer blaze along LaGuardia Road, possibly linked to the outages. In the Los Puentes district, minor river overflows caused little disruption beyond some surface water. Council workers continue assessing impacts and returning affected public facilities to normal operation.

Travelling across Spain by road – check yellow and orange alerts for rain

Yellow warnings for heavy rain and storms stay active across Jaen province and extend along the Guadalquivir valley through Cordoba and Sevilla provinces. The alerts extend further to cover Granada province and are also in Zaragoza in the northeast. Orange level alerts apply in northwest regions, in parts of Galicia and around Ponferrada in Leon, where storm activity carries higher risks. These constitute the first major summer storms of 2026 in Spain.

Drivers face delays on essential routes south

Anyone driving south towards Malaga must prepare for possible hold-ups and take extreme care on the affected roads. Heavy rain can arrive suddenly and reduce visibility sharply, creating surface water hazards, especially on secondary routes and in low-lying spots. Allow extra journey time and check updates before setting off.

Continuing storm pattern demands extreme caution across Spain

Alerts are still active for the coming hours and days, so drivers everywhere should monitor conditions closely. Localised intense downpours are still possible, with an elevated risk of flash flooding, even as the overall pattern begins to ease in some zones. Preparation now helps avoid unnecessary risks during this active early summer period.
