Emergency crews arrived too late to save a 30-year-old man who lost his life in a jet ski crash against a boat on a Fuengirola beach late on Thursday afternoon, June 18.

Witnesses raised the alarm around 5.50pm near the local harbour after they saw the vessels strike each other. Rescue teams from the Guardia Civil, local police, the Red Cross, beach lifeguards and Andalusian health services reached the scene quickly but found no way to revive the victim, who had already died at the scene. This is the first fatal jet ski incident of the current season in the area.

Four lives claimed since 2024

Police say this tragedy brings the total deaths linked to jet skis to four since early 2024. A national campaign launched only two weeks ago by the Ministry of Transport, through the Directorate General of the Merchant Navy and Maritime Rescue, called for greater caution from jet ski operators. That appeal followed three fatalities on the Costa del Sol over the previous two summers, including one child.

In 2025 a woman perished in Manilva at Playa de los Toros when her jet ski hit a jetty. Two more incidents took place in the same area between July and August of 2024. One involved a 32-year-old woman who fell into the sea from such a key ski in El Palo. Another saw a seven-year-old boy drown in Marbella after a vessel overturned in waves at Playa del Pinillo.

High inspection and sanction rates

Maritime captains receive complaints through routine checks performed by the Guardia Civil maritime service. Figures for 2025 show nearly 2,000 jet skis examined across relevant zones, with near 700 proposed for fines. This ratio means roughly one in three checks leads to formal action. In Malaga province alone, officials opened 18 serious sanction files, accounting for 48.6 per cent of all such cases recorded throughout Andalucia.

National trends show growing issues

Coastal authorities across Spain have recorded a clear rise in serious breaches involving jet skis over the past five years. Data from the Directorate General of the Merchant Navy indicate that the share of administrative files connected to these vessels stood at 12 per cent in 2020, before climbing close to 23 per cent in 2021 and remaining above 20 per cent ever since. Local and national bodies continue efforts to improve safety standards for all users of these popular recreational machines.
