Spain’s deadly heatwave has claimed a second victim after a 68-year-old man died from heatstroke in the province of Almería, adding to growing concerns over the impact of soaring temperatures across the country.
The man reportedly became ill while carrying out outdoor activities during one of the hottest periods of the current heatwave. Emergency services attended the scene, but he later died as a result of heat-related complications.
The death follows the recent passing of a 90-year-old care home resident in Bizkaia, in the Basque Country, who also died from heatstroke as temperatures surged across northern Spain. Together, the two cases mark the first confirmed fatalities linked to this summer’s extreme weather conditions.
Temperatures remain dangerously high
Large areas of Spain have experienced temperatures well above seasonal averages in recent days, with some regions recording highs above 40C. Health authorities have repeatedly warned residents to take precautions, particularly elderly people, those with underlying health conditions and anyone working outdoors.
Medical experts say heatstroke can develop rapidly when the body’s cooling mechanisms fail, leading to a dangerous rise in body temperature. Without immediate treatment, the condition can cause organ failure and death.
Health officials issue fresh warnings
Authorities continue to urge people to avoid strenuous activity during the hottest hours of the day, stay hydrated and seek cool, shaded environments whenever possible.
Spain’s heat alert system remains active across several regions, with emergency services monitoring vulnerable groups and responding to a rising number of heat-related incidents.
The latest fatality has renewed calls for extra vigilance as meteorologists warn that high temperatures are expected to continue in parts of the country throughout the week.
With two deaths now linked to the heatwave, health officials are stressing that extreme heat should be treated as a serious public health risk rather than simply a seasonal inconvenience.
