Police are investigating the deaths of a mother and daughter after their bodies were discovered inside a burning home in Mijas during the early hours of Wednesday July 8, with investigators now treating the case as a suspected double murder rather than a tragic house fire.
Emergency services were called to the property at around 2.15am after reports of a fire. Firefighters extinguished the flames before entering the house, where they found the bodies of two women. According to investigators, the victims were a woman in her 60s and her daughter, believed to be around 30 years old.
Investigation focuses on possible violent deaths
The Guardia Civil has launched a major investigation after early evidence suggested the women may have suffered violent injuries before the fire broke out.
The leading line of inquiry is that the blaze may have been deliberately started in an attempt to destroy evidence and conceal the suspected killings. Specialist forensic teams have been examining the property throughout the day, while autopsies are expected to determine the exact causes of death.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether any arrests have been made or identified potential suspects. Investigators are continuing to gather evidence, interview witnesses and reconstruct the victims’ final movements.
Community left in shock
The incident has stunned residents in the Costa del Sol town, where neighbours awoke to a significant emergency response involving firefighters, Guardia Civil officers, Local Police and medical teams.
As the investigation progresses, officers are working to establish exactly what happened inside the home before the fire started. The results of the forensic examinations and post-mortem investigations are expected to play a crucial role in determining the next steps in the case.
Authorities appeal for patience
Officials have released only limited information while the investigation remains in its early stages. Police are urging the public to avoid speculation until the forensic process is complete.
For now, what initially appeared to be a fatal house fire has become the focus of a suspected double murder investigation, with detectives seeking to establish whether the blaze was used to cover up one of the Costa del Sol’s most disturbing crimes of recent months.
