Thanks to the joint effort by the Ambulance of Desire Foundation and the Mazarron Civil Protection Service, a 95-year-old woman has been able to fulfil her dream of swimming in the Bay of Mazarron again, where she had spent countless summers as a girl. Ana María, a local resident, was helped into the water by members of the foundation and officials, reuniting with a place that was intimately linked with some of the most special memories of her life.
A nostalgic return to the sea for a beloved 95-year-old neighbour
Though Ana María’s children thought the feat would be “impossible” for her due to her physical condition, the 95-year-old was provided with the necessary transport and safety equipment in order to enter the water. She was all smiles as she felt the sand underneath her feet, the sea breeze on her face, and the calm of the crystal waters.
More than just a swim: A journey and a symbol of hope for other vulnerable residents
“It wasn’t just a swim,” stated the Ambulance of Desire Foundation in a Facebook post about the event. “It was a journey into her memories, a reunion with a part of her life, and a moment that both she and her family will cherish forever.”
For Mazarron residents, Ana María’s journey back to the Bay of Mazarron represents not just a kindness for an elderly resident, but a commitment by local officials and organisations like the Ambulance of Desire Foundation to making a difference in the lives of friends and neighbours, no matter their age.
The Ambulance of Desire Foundation is a local nonprofit organisation based in Murcia, Spain, that helps to fulfil the wishes of patients suffering from a chronic or incurable illness and who need an ambulance and team of healthcare professionals to carry out their dreams.
A community committed to coastal accessibility
This touching moment also highlights the municipality’s commitment to accessibility along the local coastline. The Mazarron Civil Protection Service, in coordination with local authorities, operates a dedicated assisted bathing service during the peak summer months at several of Mazarron’s main beaches. These are equipped with amphibious wheelchairs, specialised crutches, and trained personnel in order to ensure that individuals with reduced mobility or special needs can safely enjoy this iconic stretch of the Costa Calida coastline. Providing these vital resources, Mazarron fosters an inclusive environment where the joy of the beach is accessible to everyone, ensuring no resident or visitor is left behind.
