The Mazarron neighbourhood of Playasol I has officially made history, wrapping up the very first edition of its Fiestas Populares. Taking place from Friday, June 26 to Sunday, June 28, this three-day celebration brought the community together near the local Playasol stadium for an unforgettable weekend of culture, sports, and deep-rooted neighbourhood pride.

A resident-driven celebration of community

The festivities were part of the “Todxs a Una”, or “All for One” project, an initiative that aimed to boost community participation and integration. However, one of the things that made the first edition of the event so special was that it was entirely designed by the local residents themselves.

Weekend highlights of music, sport and foam parties

The event kicked off on Friday with children’s activities at the CEIP Manuela Romero, followed by a lively, vibrant parade with performances by the San José Parish Drums and Bugles Band. The evening also marked a major milestone for the area: the official presentation of the newly formed “Jardín de la Sirena” Neighbors’ Association, topped off with a live performance by Sali Merino.

Saturday saw a massive foam party and a neighbourhood scavenger hunt entitled “The Mysteries of Playasol I” take place, spelling excitement and fun for local youths. Sports fans also gathered for an exciting veteran women’s football match, while the evening filled the air with diverse musical flavours, featuring the traditional Rondalla de Mazarron, the vibrant rhythms of Dakka Marrakchia, and a high-energy concert by local talent Iguana Lola.

A grand finale, building up to future editions of the Fiestas

Finally, the grand finale on Sunday honoured local roots with a traditional dress parade accompanied by a powerful batucada drumline. The community then gathered for a massive cookout featuring a giant, delicious Spanish tortilla, a barbecue, and a local charity market, allowing for residents to stand in solidarity as they shopped.

With the successful first edition of this event, it is clear that the residents of neighbourhoods in Mazarron can do anything they set their minds to, and these Fiestas are sure to be the first of many for this vibrant and lively group of neighbours, families, and friends.
