This July and August, the coastal town of Calpe will come alive with a spectacular fusion of deep-rooted devotion, vibrant music, and dazzling pyrotechnics. Organised in honour of the town’s patron saint, the Virgen de las Nieves, this highly anticipated festival will transform the historic centre into a stage of colour and celebration. Beginning on July 31 and running through to August 10, this unique cultural event will unite locals and visitors in a joyous showcase of Mediterranean tradition, offering a perfect blend of religious solemnity and spectacular summer fun.
A festival led by the town’s youth
One of the most unique aspects of Calpe’s patronal festival is its leadership. Each year, the festival committee is spearheaded by the town’s festeros, or local youth celebrating milestone birthdays of 18 and 8 years old, alongside a court of queens. These young residents will take centre stage during the beautiful presentation ceremonies, dressed in traditional attire. Their involvement brings an incredible sense of pride, energy, and generational continuity to the celebrations, making it a true community-driven event.
Flower offerings and grand parades
A large aspect of the festival are the traditional parades and acts of devotion. The streets of the old town will be filled with the scent of fresh blossoms during the flower offering to the Virgen de las Nieves. Marching bands will fill the air with traditional pasodoble rhythms as residents in regional costumes make their way to the parish church.
Following this, the grand colourful parade, or Cabalgata de Disfraces, will see groups of locals marching in highly creative, handmade costumes, accompanied by elaborate floats that will delight spectators of all ages.
Dazzling light and thunderous fire
Calpe will close out the festival in a display of pyrotechnics and spectacle. The skies above the iconic Peñón de Ifach will be illuminated by magnificent late-night fireworks displays. A major highlight is the Mascletà, a thunderous daytime pyrotechnic concert of sound and rhythm that reverberates through the town square, capturing the true, fiery spirit of Valencian culture.
With its perfect harmony of historical traditions, family-friendly events, and lively open-air concerts, the Virgen de las Nieves festival continues to be a shining jewel in Calpe’s summer calendar.
