This summer, the coastal town of Villajoyosa is preparing to transform into a vibrant stage of history, music, and dramatic coastal battles. The highly anticipated Moros y Cristianos, or Moors and Christians festival, will run from July 24 to July 31, bringing centuries of maritime heritage and theatrical tradition to life in honour of the town’s patron saint, Santa Marta.
Re-enacting a legendary maritime defence
While festive energy will fill the streets throughout the entire week, the core of the historic programme will peak around July 27 and July 28, with the commemoration of the dramatic events of 1538, when Barbary pirates launched a massive assault on the town from the Mediterranean Sea. According to local legend, Santa Marta came to the rescue of the townspeople by conjuring a sudden flood that swept the enemy ships back out to sea. To honour this miracle, the town stages the arrival of the pirate ship, the dramatic diplomatic exchanges known as the Embajadas, and the eventual Christian Reconquista.
The spectacular beachfront landing
Another major highlight of the week will take place in the small hours of July 28 with the breathtaking landing of the reenactors on the town’s central beach. As dawn approaches, the shoreline will erupt with the sound of thousands of blank gunpowder cartridges, traditional brass bands, and roaring crowds. More than thirty sea vessels representing the Moorish army will arrive on the coast, while Christian defenders wait on the shore to engage in a simulated, mock battle in the water. It is a stunning, traditional visual display that perfectly showcases Villajoyosa’s unique maritime identity and sandy shores.
A community united in celebration
In addition to the historical reenactments and fun, the week-long festival is also a profound celebration of unity and local pride. The town’s streets will come alive with the festive associations marching in intricate historical costumes to the rhythms of traditional Moorish and Christian music. Blending its unique mix of history, theatrics, and late-night festivities, this year’s Moors and Christians celebrations in Villajoyosa promise an unforgettable summer experience for locals and visitors alike.
