A day of remembrance: Los Gallardos honours wildfire victims

It was a solemn day in Los Gallardos, when residents and representatives of the fire and rescue teams gathered to honour the victims of the devastating wildfires.

Following the fires, the Los Gallardos Town Council unanimously agreed to suspend the towns traditional patron saint festivities. Instead, the town convened for a memorial mass to remember those who had lost their lives, and honour those who fought on the front lines.

Every seat was filled by neighbours, representatives of the State Security Forces and Corps, and members of the fire and rescue services. All listened attentively to the service, presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese of Almería, whose speech was rooted in remembrance and gratitude.

The parish priest of Los Gallardos and Bédar, Víctor Manuel Fernández, was also in attendance. He took the opportunity to reach out to the crowd, explaining “I simply wanted to be with you, to put faces to you, and to accompany you in your suffering.” While their words cannot heal the pain completely, they did offer some relief to those gathered.

Community support for Almería wildfire victims grows

In the weeks since the fires started, the response from the community has been remarkable. Stranger have helped one another, charity organisations have received enormous donations, and GoFundMe fundraisers have collected over €80,000 combined.

Still, the community support continues. In recent days, several benefit concerts have been announced, raising funds for those affected by the fires.

Benefit concerts in Vera and Mojácar raise funds for wildfire recovery

On Saturday, July 25, the Ben Bédar Musical Association of Bédar-Los Gallardos will take to the stage at the Vera City Auditorium for a special fundraising concert. Tickets are priced at just €5, with proceeds supporting those affected by the wildfires.

Meanwhile in Mojácar, the expat community are also rallying behind the recovery effort as Delfos del Faz hosts its Musical Marathon. More than 30 popular local acts have signed up to perform at the show, which runs from 12pm on Sunday, July 26. Organisers have also promised plenty of surprises through the day. Tickets cost €10, with all proceeds donated to Lions Club Vera, and distributed to the wildfire victims.

As Los Gallardos and the surrounding communities continue to recover from one of the region’s most devastating wildfires, the memorial service and upcoming fundraising events stand as a reminder that, even in the face of tragedy, solidarity remains stronger than ever.
