Vera stands together at sold-out charity concert in aid of wildfire victims

A packed auditorium gave the Banda de Música Ben Beder a unanimous standing ovation after its magnificent fundraiser performance. The Vera concert became the latest part of a much wider effort to help people affected by the recent Bédar and Los Gallardos fires.

How Ben Beder turned their multiple cancelled concerts into a special one-night-only charity event

The Banda de Música Ben Beder would normally give summer concerts in both Bédar and Los Gallardos, the two municipalities that jointly support the association. Those performances were unfortunately suspended following the fires, but the musicians chose not to let their annual programme disappear. Instead, they reshaped it as a benefit concert and moved the performance to the Auditorio Ciudad de Vera, where there was more space and the necessary infrastructure. Vera, Bédar and Los Gallardos councils all collaborated in staging the fundraising event.

The €5 concert began at 8pm on Saturday July 25 and sold out before the musicians took to the stage. Photographs released afterwards show the stalls, balcony and side seating filled, with the audience on its feet applauding at the close.

Vera Council described it as “a very special night” and said music had become a source of “support, closeness and hope”. 

A weekend of musical fundraising

The Vera performance was followed on Sunday July 26 by another music-led fundraiser at Delfos del Faz in Mojácar. Its 12-hour Musical Marathon brought together more than 30 local acts, alongside food and market stalls, with €10 tickets supporting the Lions Club Vera’s assistance for people affected by the fire.

Well-known artists had also used their stages to recognise the disaster. Almería-born David Bisbal dedicated words to the affected families during the Weekend Beach Festival in Torre del Mar, while Antonio Orozco paid tribute in Almería city to the victims, emergency workers and volunteers he called “heroes”.

Help began before the curtain rose

The concerts followed an immediate wave of practical and financial support. By July 16, ten online appeals connected to the fire had raised a combined €86,639 for injured residents, families rebuilding homes and local animals. 

Earlier, donations of food, water and clothing had filled collection points. Indalo Transport supplied 1,000 boxes and another 1,000 blankets, residents opened their homes to evacuees, and volunteers returned to affected areas to leave food and search for missing pets.

The packed Vera auditorium therefore captures a wider shift in the response. Emergency donations have gradually given way to organised fundraising, with local musicians and audiences helping to sustain the recovery after the first rush of assistance.
