Sailboat rescue drama: Crew saved after running aground near Javea’s Portitxol island

A routine day on the water turned into a rescue operation off the coast of Javea after a sailing boat with two people on board ran aground in restricted waters near the iconic Portitxol Island.

The incident happened on Tuesday, August 4, when the yacht became stranded in the narrow channel between the island and the mainland, prompting an emergency call to Spain’s Maritime Rescue service. The crew alerted authorities over VHF radio, leading the Valencia Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre to dispatch the Salvamar Fénix rescue vessel from Javea.

When rescuers reached the scene, they successfully refloated the yacht before carrying out checks to ensure it had not suffered structural damage.

Fortunately, inspectors confirmed the vessel remained seaworthy and was able to continue its journey without assistance. Neither of the two people on board was injured during the incident.

Restricted channel remains a summer hotspot

The grounding took place in one of Javea’s most scenic yet environmentally sensitive stretches of coastline.

Although the channel between Portitxol Island and the shore is clearly marked with navigation buoys, pleasure craft are not permitted to pass through the shallow waters. The restrictions are designed not only to prevent accidents but also to protect fragile marine habitats beneath the surface.

Despite the warnings, authorities say some skippers continue attempting the shortcut every summer, increasing the likelihood of boats running aground.

This latest incident follows another grounding in the same area only a few weeks earlier, reinforcing concerns about vessels ignoring the clearly signposted restrictions.

Safety reminder for summer boaters

With thousands of recreational boats now filling the Costa Blanca coastline during the holiday season, Maritime Rescue is once again reminding skippers to follow local navigation rules and pay close attention to buoyed exclusion zones.

Areas such as Portitxol are protected for both safety and environmental reasons, and even experienced sailors can encounter problems if they stray into shallow channels.

Thanks to the rapid response of the Salvamar Fénix crew, this incident ended without injuries or pollution, but officials hope it serves as another reminder that ignoring maritime restrictions can quickly turn a day at sea into an emergency.
