Football fans gasp as pre-match stunt takes unexpected turn at Dutch season opener

Thousands of supporters gathered at De Adelaarshorst Stadium in Deventer for the opening weekend of the new Eredivisie season, but it was a dramatic pre-match incident rather than the football that first grabbed everyone’s attention.

Skydiver misses target during match-ball delivery

Fans were dressed in their teams colours, they had found their seats and were ready for the game, but just before kick-off between Go Ahead Eagles and Willem II, organisers had arranged a special match-ball delivery involving a team of skydivers descending into the stadium as part of the pre-match entertainment.

However, one skydiver appeared to drift off course during his descent. Instead of landing near the centre of the field, he headed towards one end of the stadium and was unable to correct his trajectory.

The parachutist crashed into the goal structure and advertising boards surrounding the pitch, as seen in the below video, drawing audible gasps from supporters inside the ground. For a few moments, many feared the impact may have resulted in a serious injury.

Commentator’s comments brings laughter

As concern rippled around the stadium, television commentators reacted to the incident with a mixture of shock and humour. “The first injury of the season is a fact, not of a player, but a parachutist,” one commentator remarked as spectators waited to see if the skydiver was hurt.

Fortunately, the fears proved unfounded. Moments after the collision, the parachutist climbed back to his feet, raised his arms towards the crowd and appeared to have escaped without serious injury. The gesture was met with relief and applause from supporters who had witnessed the dramatic landing.

Footage of the incident quickly spread online, attracting attention from football fans. “I felt that. Damn,” wrote one viewer. Another commented: “Oof, that didn’t go quite as planned.” “That’s quite a landing,” added a third. Others could not resist making light of the mishap. One fan joked: “There is such a big goal and you miss that too.”

Maybe next time just walking onto the pitch with the ball would be sufficient.
