Forget having just a slather of plain butter on a slice of white, move over wine cellars and cheese counters, the queue outside this shopfront shows what Parisians are currently getting excited over.
A shop built entirely on butter
Le Butter Shop, tucked away on Rue Bouchut near the Eiffel Tower, has become France’s first boutique dedicated purely to butter since opening last month. Owner Erwan Leo stocks around 30 varieties sourced from small family producers across Brittany, the Loire Valley and northern France, including names such as Beillevaire, Beurre Dupont, Rodolphe Le Meunier, Echire and Isigny Sainte-Mere. Bordier, arguably France’s most famous butter brand, is notably absent, a deliberate choice, Leo says, to spotlight smaller makers whose work is harder to find elsewhere.
Given that French households get through roughly 8 kilograms of the stuff per person every year, according to the country’s agriculture ministry, a shop like this feels almost overdue.
Tasting butter like a fine wine
Customers are invited to sample before they buy, dipping a spoon into open tubs rather than committing blind to a purchase. Portions range from a 10-gram pat right up to a full kilogram block. Leo, who also runs a wine-tasting business on the side, treats butter with the same reverence he’d give a good Burgundy. “You have to grab your spoon, put it on your palate, on your tongue, it has to melt a little bit, and then the flavours are going to start coming one by one,” he explains. Moderation still applies, he insists, capping his own habit at four slices of buttered bread a day.

Sweet, savoury and downright surprising flavours
It’s not just the classics you would expect, the boutique shop also has some genuinely unexpected creations: shallot, seaweed, wild garlic, and lemon with green pepper for the savoury-minded, plus vanilla, raspberry, strawberry and chocolate for those with a sweeter tooth. “Most people don’t expect to like a raspberry butter or to like chocolate butter,” Leo says. “And when they try it, this is where they’re just like, ‘Oh wow, OK.'” Croissant-flavoured and violet butters are reportedly next on the drawing board.
Social media buzz has exploded with many taking to posting their experiences of a visit to the new venture. The excitement has driven a steady stream of curious visitors through the door, forcing Leo to expand his team to four staff within weeks of launching.
Worth remembering next time a Paris trip calls, as he vacuums packs and seals in cooler bags for longer journeys to hold up on the flight home.
