A Torre del Mar hiking club has just returned from a gruelling Granada challenge with two prizes and a boost before the autumn resistance season.

Torre del Mar hikers tackle Sierra Nevada

Sixteen members of Club Deportivo Playas de Torre del Mar travelled to La Zubia for the XIX Marcha Popular de Resistencia, attracting more than 150 competitors from across Andalucia.

Eight Torre del Mar athletes entered the 50-kilometre Integral, while another six took on the 29-kilometre Media. Every club member completed their route, bringing satisfaction back to the Axarquia.

Much of the event took place at more than 3,000 metres above sea level, putting competitors through a test of endurance in the Sierra Nevada area.

Two prizes for the Axarquia club

Mª Carmen Torres added a success by being named the oldest participant in the Media event.

Club Deportivo Playas de Torre del Mar collected the prize for the largest club delegation, giving the Axarquia team another reason to celebrate after a tough weekend in the mountains.

Rafael Sanchez, president of the club, said the group’s presence at events was about more than sport.

“We want to help make our area visible in these events inside and outside Malaga,” he said. Hearing Torre del Mar and the Axarquia mentioned when members reach a podium was, he added, a source of great local pride.

Andalucia title race continues

The Granada outing also signals the club’s return to competition after its summer break. Its next test comes on October 3 in Alhaurin de la Torre, when the second part of the Andalucian Resistance Trekking Cup gets under way.

Playas de Torre del Mar currently sits at the top of the Andalucian standings, giving the team a fight for during the rounds. Anyone interested in joining the club or finding out more about its resistance trekking activities can contact playasdetorredelmar@gmail.com.
