Marina Alta plans 390km of safer cycling and walking routes with huge investment

The Marina Alta could be set for a major rethink of how residents travel around the region, with a new mobility plan proposing hundreds of kilometres of routes for cyclists and pedestrians.

€12.3 million investment

The Mancomunitat Comarcal de la Marina Alta (MACMA) has completed the first draft of its Plan de Movilidad No Motorizada, backed by an estimated investment of €12.35 million.

The proposal would create a network of 77 non-motorised sections covering 390.4 kilometres, linking coastal and inland communities through existing rural paths, traditional routes and quieter roads.

The plan is intended to provide alternatives to private car travel while making journeys between towns safer and more accessible.

New cycling and walking connections

Among the proposed projects is a new pedestrian and cycling bridge over the N-332 between Pedreguer and Jesús Pobre, identified as one of the key points requiring intervention.

The plan also proposes connecting the Marina Alta to EuroVelo 8, the major Mediterranean cycling route. The planned branch would run north to south through the comarca, passing areas including Pego, Dénia, Xàbia, Poble Nou de Benitatxell, Moraira and Calpe.

Other measures include secure automated bicycle parking, with 980 spaces proposed across the comarca, alongside 400 additional U-shaped bicycle stands.

E-bikes and digital travel

The proposed network would also include 35 multifunctional points offering electric bicycle charging and basic repair facilities.

A dedicated regional GPS app is planned too, allowing users to navigate the network while locating charging points, repair workshops and other points of interest.

Residents invited to shape the plan

The document remains a draft, with MACMA planning public meetings in Calpe, Orba, Jesús Pobre and Pego during October.

The sessions will allow residents, cycling groups, businesses, community organisations and others to examine the proposed routes and suggest changes before the plan progresses.

The initiative is therefore being presented as a starting point for creating a more connected transport network across the Marina Alta, rather than a finished project.
