Firefighters from Estepona were called out early on Saturday afternoon to tackle a dramatic vehicle fire on the AP-7 motorway. The incident occurred at kilometre 1073, in the direction of Cadiz (towards Algeciras), within the municipal limits of Estepona on the Costa del Sol.

According to the Consorcio Provincial de Bomberos de Malaga (CPB Malaga) fire brigade, the passenger car was completely engulfed in flames by the time crews arrived. The fire also scorched a small section of the roadside verge along the edge of the carriageway. Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control, and there were no injuries or personal damage reported.

The response came from the Estepona fire station, part of the provincial consortium that covers much of the western Costa del Sol. Official updates from CPB Malaga, shared on social media shortly after the intervention, confirmed that the vehicle burned out entirely but that the fire did not extend beyond the immediate edge of the road.

The location is a busy stretch of the toll motorway that runs parallel to the coast through Estepona. Kilometre 1073 sits in the western part of the municipality, on the Cadiz-bound carriageway. While the exact cause has not yet been confirmed, vehicle fires on Spanish motorways are a regular occurrence. National estimates suggest around 12,000 vehicles catch fire on Spanish roads each year, or roughly 30 a day. Common triggers include electrical faults, mechanical failures, or overheating components.

Importantly, this incident remained limited. Unlike a more serious event in early July on the same motorway near Estepona (at kilometre 1068), when a lorry carrying vehicles caught fire and the flames spread into adjacent bushes and trees, requiring assistance from the Infoca forest fire service, Saturday’s blaze was contained to the car and a narrow strip of the roadside. Firefighters reported no further propagation, and no major fire or evacuation was triggered.

Conditions in the area on Saturday were relatively mild for the time of year, with temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius and lighter winds, which may have helped limit the risk of the fire jumping into nearby scrub or grassland. Still, the episode underlines the ongoing hazard of vehicle fires along the AP-7 and A-7 corridors, where dry roadside plant life can turn a contained incident into something much larger under hotter or windier conditions.

Local emergency services continue to urge drivers to pull over safely if they notice smoke or unusual smells from a vehicle and to maintain a safe distance from any roadside fire. The Consorcio Provincial de Bomberos has not indicated any further updates or investigations beyond the initial extinction report.

For residents and visitors on the Costa del Sol, the swift containment is a reminder of the rapid response capability of local fire services, even as the region remains alert to the broader wildfire risks that have marked much of 2026 across Andalucia and the rest of Spain.
