A wildfire broke out near the El Peñoncillo urbanisation in Torrox Costa during the early hours of Tuesday, October 27, leading to a joint response from provincial firefighters and Andalucia’s forest fire service.

The blaze affected scrubland near Olée Torrox Costa Holiday Apartments, with reports indicating that the fire spread uphill. The cause of the ignition has not yet been confirmed.

Firefighters tackle overnight blaze

Crews from the Provincial Fire Brigade of Malaga (Consorcio Provincial de Bomberos) attended from the Nerja and Velez-Malaga fire stations, working alongside teams from Plan Infoca, Andalucia’s forest fire service, the regional service responsible for tackling wildfires.

According to Infoca, the fire was brought under control at 7.30am on Tuesday morning. One group of forest firefighters and one specialist fire engine were deployed to support the provincial crews.

The provincial fire brigade confirmed that its personnel withdrew while Infoca teams continued working at the scene.

The coordinated response was concentrated around the area close to the El Peñoncillo residential development, where scrub vegetation provides fuel that can allow flames to spread.

Cause of Torrox fire remains unknown

Neither the provincial fire brigade nor Infoca has identified what started the blaze in the information published so far. Although the fire’s uphill spread has been reported, there is no confirmed evidence that wind was responsible for its direction or speed. The possibility of an accidental ignition cannot be ruled out, but no cause has been established.

Wildfires can start through several routes, including accidental human activity, deliberate ignition and natural causes. Establishing the origin normally requires evidence from the scene and, where necessary, a specialist investigation. The Junta de Andalucia provides official guidance on preventing forest fires, including precautions involving cigarettes, rubbish and open flames.

No confirmed figures have been published in the information available about the area of land burned, damage to nearby properties or whether any residents were evacuated.

The fire’s reported status as under control at 7.30am indicates that firefighters had contained its spread, although Infoca personnel were still working at the location after the provincial crews withdrew.

Further information from the emergency services would be needed to establish the cause and full extent of the incident.
