An ordinary journey turned into a potentially deadly ordeal when an elderly motorist was spotted driving directly towards oncoming traffic on a Danish motorway, leaving other road users facing a frightening situation.

The 81-year-old man was stopped by police after allegedly travelling in the wrong direction along the South Jutland Motorway, near the town of Tinglev in Denmark.

The incident prompted police intervention late at night, with officers subsequently charging the driver with reckless driving.

Police receive multiple reports

According to Danish police, several members of the public contacted officers at 10.39pm after spotting a car travelling southbound in a lane intended for northbound traffic.

The vehicle was reported near Tinglev, in southern Denmark, where motorists could have been confronted with the car approaching them from the opposite direction.

Officers were dispatched to deal with the potentially dangerous situation and successfully stopped the vehicle.

Police then seized the car and charged the 81-year-old driver with reckless driving.

The circumstances behind the incident, including why the motorist ended up travelling in the wrong direction, were not detailed in the initial police report.

Car seized following incident

The incident was included in a police statement issued by Syd- og Sønderjyllands Politi (South and South Jutland Police) on Monday, October 26.

The force confirmed that the vehicle had been stopped and seized, while the pensioner was formally charged.

Driving against the direction of traffic on a motorway is particularly dangerous because approaching motorists may have little time to react, especially when travelling at high speeds or navigating poorly lit stretches of road at night.

The incident has also highlighted the importance of motorists reporting suspected wrong-way drivers immediately, allowing police to intervene before a potentially catastrophic collision occurs.

Police yet to explain how driver went the wrong way

It remains unclear how the 81-year-old managed to enter the motorway in the wrong direction or whether other vehicles were forced to take evasive action.

Police have not provided further details about whether anyone else was involved or if there were any injuries.

The initial announcement also did not clarify whether the driver was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or whether confusion or another factor contributed to the incident.

For now, the swift police response meant the vehicle was stopped before any collision was reported.

The case comes as a reminder of the dangers posed by so-called ‘ghost drivers’, the term used in several European countries to describe motorists travelling against the flow of traffic on major roads.
