A weekend climbing trip in Spain’s Costa Blanca North took a frightening turn after a man was seriously injured in a fall on a remote mountain ridge, triggering a challenging helicopter rescue operation involving specialist mountain firefighters.
The climber, aged around 45, was left needing urgent medical attention after falling against rocks while tackling a climbing route along the Cresta de Segària, in the Marina Alta area of Alicante province, on Saturday, October 31.
With the injured man stranded on steep, inaccessible terrain, emergency crews faced a race against time to reach him. The difficult conditions meant a conventional ground rescue was not a viable option, forcing firefighters to launch a specialist aerial operation.

The alarm was raised at approximately 10.35am by the man’s climbing companion, who alerted emergency services after the accident.
Local Police in El Verger helped pinpoint the climber’s location and assisted with coordinating the response.
Although the man remained conscious following the fall, he had suffered injuries of varying severity and required medical assistance.
The biggest challenge for rescuers was the location. The accident happened on a particularly rugged section of the ridge, where reaching the casualty on foot would have been extremely difficult and could have delayed treatment considerably.
The Alicante Provincial Fire Consortium therefore dispatched its specialist Mountain Rescue Group, together with its MV9R rescue helicopter.
However, the operation was made even more complicated by the weather.
Strong winds and difficult meteorological conditions in the mountainous area created additional challenges for the helicopter crew as they attempted to approach the rocky section safely.

Specialist rescuers were lowered from the aircraft to reach the casualty, where they worked to secure him onto a stretcher before lifting him aboard the helicopter.
The injured climber was then flown to the helipad at Dénia Fire Station, where medical teams were waiting to take over his care.
An ambulance was subsequently responsible for his transfer for hospital treatment.
The helicopter also returned to the mountain to evacuate the climber’s companion, who had raised the alarm and remained at the scene during the emergency response.
The complicated operation finally came to an end at approximately 1.10pm, more than two and a half hours after the initial emergency call.
The incident once again highlights the challenges faced by emergency services when responding to accidents in some of the Marina Alta’s most difficult mountain locations.
Weekend of mountain rescues in Marina Alta
The incident was not an isolated emergency for firefighters in the region.
According to reports, the Cresta de Segària rescue was one of three mountain-related interventions carried out by the Alicante Provincial Fire Consortium across the Marina Alta between Friday, October 30 and Sunday, November 1.
Other operations included rescuing a climber who suffered a leg fracture following a fall in Alcalalí and assisting two hikers who became lost near Montgó in Dénia.
The incidents underline the importance of preparation, suitable equipment and awareness of changing weather conditions when exploring the area’s mountain trails and climbing routes.
