Local residents, eager sports enthusiasts, and visiting families gathered in force across Nerja and Maro to cheer on hundreds of determined athletes tackling one of the Axarquia region’s favourite outdoor sporting events. The popular coastal town turned into a lively celebration of fitness, community spirit, and rugged nature as the mountain running gathering reached a roaring success.
Three exciting races bring generations together
Monday, November 2 saw seasoned runners take on the primary challenge, the XII Almijara Trail, covering 22.3 steep kilometres and climbing 1,100 metres through the stunning natural paths. Athletes seeking a quicker pace tackled the X Mini Trail, which took competitors around a brisk 11-kilometre circuit.
Family members cheered enthusiastically as local children stepped up to take part in the inaugural Almijara Trail Kids. Adding a youth category brought a wonderful family dynamic to the day, giving young runners a taste of organised mountain racing.
Neighbours rally to support runners in Maro and Nerja
Energetic applause greeted participants from the moment they left the starting line at the Enrique Lopez Cuenca Athletics Stadium. Volunteers and local supporters set up hydration stations, shouted words of encouragement, and helped ensure safety along the scenic routes winding through the Sierra de Almijara.
Town officials praised the turnout, noting how seamlessly the community rallied together to support both elite athletes and casual runners completing personal goals.
A warm celebration of life on the coast
Local sports groups, including Club Nerja Atletismo, and local authorities expressed pride in how the event showcased the area’s natural landscape, having to negotiate steep limestone hills, pine forest paths, and tricky trails.
Organisers extended warm congratulations to every participant who took on the challenge. As medals were awarded, traditional runner bags handed out, and tired athletes shared stories over the post-race paella at the stadium, everyone agreed that the day had successfully brought people together for a shared goal.
