Environmentalists report illegal tipping around Velez-Malaga

LOCAL environmentalists have complained of illegal dumping in the areas surrounding Velez-Malaga.

The Axarquia Nature Research Office, GENA-Ecologistas en Accion, have presented a report to the town hall complaining that rubble, garden refuse, white goods and furniture is dumped in areas around the town, mainly at the industrial estates, such as El Higueral, and the roads to Torrox, Algarrobo and Arenas, as well as the local fortress which is classified as an Asset of Cultural Interest and is visited by tourists.

The President, Rafael Yus, explained that this causes irreparable damage to the area and gives a poor image which in no way benefits tourism or the welfare of local residents.

Gena has requested that the town hall launch a plan of action to remove all these illegal tips and create a recycling plant outside the town in an area which will have no negative impact on the environment.

They also suggest increased vigilance of companies which transport rubble and other unwanted items.

The town hall said they do not have the equipment to deal with the problem, but that police surveillance will be increased with plain clothes officers.
