AN electric van and two mopeds have been left for a week’s trial period with Orihuela Town Hall by a Murcian company.
“The van will be used by the Environment Department employees in Palmera,” said Transport Councillor Martina Scheurer.
“The two mopeds have been passed to the local police.”
Electric vehicles cost just €1 to travel 250km, while those using gas cost 14 times that, according to Scheurer.
They also “cost nothing to maintain and are silent and practical,” she added.
“If the civil servants testing the vehicles are happy, we will buy them as soon as possible.”
Mayor Monserrat Guillen added that they have also taken out a rental contract for eight hybrid cars so police officers can carry out their work in the municipality.
The aim is to “progressively change” the fleet to environmentally friendly vehicles.
