A FORMER Ceuta councillor was arrested after police found 690 kilos of hashish in a van he was driving.
He was detained as he prepared to embark on the Algeciras ferry. Police went straight to the vehicle and located blocks of the drug, hidden in different parts of the vehicle. They were acting on a tip-off, sources later explained.
He was totally innocent and had no idea that there were drugs in the van, claimed the ex-councillor. He had merely borrowed it to do some removals, he insisted.
He remained in custody after failing to give convincing answers regarding the identity of the person who had lent him the van. He later went before a judge, who ordered his remand. The confiscated hashish was not grown in Morocco but was imported from Pakistan. This is the first time that hashish of this type has been detected in Ceuta and suggests a new entry route, according to the El Faro de Ceuta newspaper.
The investigation is ongoing, police sources said, and further arrests are likely.
