Dolly Parton denies lip syncing

Dolly Parton’s highly anticipated set went down very well with the Glastonbury faithful on Sunday night.

The hour long performance from the 68-year-old included classics such as ‘Jolene’ and ‘9 to 5’ and also included new songs such as ‘Lay Your Hands On Me’.

Stepping out onto the stage, an emotional Parton said to the 100,000 strong crowd: “I’ve been waiting a long time for this. I’m so glad you came. I can’t do a bunch of sad songs, everyone is drunk and high.”

Yet, not long after, Twitter was abuzz with allegations of lip syncing. Sky news presenter Kay Burley was one of the first to slam Parton. She tweeted “Oh, Dolly is miming. How disappointing”

However, Stephen Fry quickly stepped in to defend Parton by tweeting: “Why are people saying Dolly Parton is miming? She’s fooling me…”

He later added: “That’s not miming. If it appears not always to lip-sync that’s an HD live processor issue. You see it with reporters.”

Dolly’s spokespeople have simply stated: “She was singing live.”

Parton has been relatively honest about her use of pre-recording technology in the past. Back in 2004, she released a statement on her fan site explaining: “Yes, there are portions of the songs in the show that are prerecorded. I tell you that at the beginning of the show when I say, ‘If you notice some enhancement or doctoring in the show, it’s not to fool or trick anyone. It’s an effort to entertain by being able to have a bigger production and, hopefully, a better sound.'”
