Rapid action saves lives in Mallorca

A MAN in his fifties had to be treated for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in the kitchen of his home in Nou Llevant, Palma.

Firemen extinguished the blaze in the sixth-floor apartment after some 90 minutes. The man was taken to a health centre. The kitchen was damaged.

In Magaluf, 50 people were evacuated from the Magasol apartment complex after a fire broke out in the utility room, which was the only are which was damaged.

In another incident, two National Police officers had to be treated for smoke inhalation after rescuing a woman, 85, from a fire in a second-floor apartment in Son Gotleu, Palma.

Local Police rescued a woman, 25, and her five-month-old baby from the apartment above, while most of the other residents were able to exit the building on their own.

The Local Police used extinguishers to attempt to put out the blaze until firemen arrived.

The National Police officers were admitted to hospital, as were the elderly woman, the mother and baby, and another woman who suffered an anxiety attack. The apartment was seriously damaged by the fire, but the structure of the building was unharmed.
