FOOD CAMPAIGN: Collected 5,400 kilos.
THE fourth national great food campaign, which collects food for local food banks, has been a huge success.
One local town, La Nucia, collected 5,400 kilos of non-perishable food over three days at the end of November thanks to the generosity of the public and local supermarkets. Participating stores were Dialprix, Supermarket La Nucia, Lidl and the Mercadona at Plaza del Sol in the town.
The campaign run nationally by the Spanish Federation of Food Banks was coordinated in La Nucia by Beatriz Pérez-Hickman, councillor for Social Welfare, who was also on hand at some of the supermarkets to receive the many donations.
Seventy volunteers ensured that whilst stores were open people were able to donate food they had purchased in addition to their own shopping.
The 5,400 kilos will be given to the Food Bank of La Nucia who will distribute the items to their registered customers.
