TWO men have died after a 34-year-old French driver caused a head-on collision by speeding down the wrong side of a Tenerife motorway.
Emergency services received a number of calls from concerned motorists who reported that a BMW 330 was careering into oncoming traffic.
A few minutes later it slammed into a Renault Kangoo van driven by a 33-year-old Spaniard, with both men likely to have died instantly due to the force of the collision, said police.
The two vehicles came to rest tens of metres apart and were so mangled that the bodies had to be cut free from the wreckage by fire fighters.
The incident occurred just after 5am at kilometre 37 of the TF-1 motorway near the town of Arico, and caused an 18-kilometre tailback.
A Guardia Civil probe will see more than a dozen witnesses questioned as investigators try to determine where the BMW joined the motorway and the circumstances surrounding the crash.
