A GUARDIA CIVIL vessel has rescued 1,065 migrants in 24 hours following their departure from the Libyan Coast.
The Rio de Segura ship is currently serving Operation Triton, conducted by the EU border agency Frontex, in the Central Mediterranean which helps mostly migrant ships departing Africa.
The people rescued include national of several different African countries including Nigeria, South Africa, Mali, Ghana, Guinea, Benin, and Togo. The group consisted of multiple women, some of whom were pregnant, and babies.
This rescue coincides with the surge of people departing by boat from the North African Coast following the end of Ramadan. The numbers of people being taken to Italy because of this has caused them to threaten port closure to migrant boats.
