A 51-YEAR-OLD Costa del Sol firefighter has died after holding his breath underwater for too long in the pool of his home in a bid to improve his lung capacity. Alejandro IO, who lived in Alhaurin de la Torre, was reportedly with his wife and two children aged six and 11 at the time. Joaquin Villanova, the Mayor of Alhaurin, said the town had lost a “good neighbour” and added he was concerned an ambulance had taken around 50 minutes to arrive. The 51-year-old Torremolinos firefighter was dragged out of his pool by his wife after their children told her he had not surfaced. Emergency services medical personnel were called and a neighbour tried to resuscitate the man. Paramedics declared him dead when they arrived. The firefighter of 15 years is believed to have drowned. Coroners were due to confirm the cause of death in a post-mortem this week.
