THE director of a day care centre in San Cristobal de La Laguna on the island of Tenerife has been arrested for the alleged mistreatment of children under her care.
The 28-year-old woman has not been named by authorities but numerous reports from concerned parents have come to light, highlighting the possible mistreatment of the children, aged between zero up to three-years-old.
Concerns were raised after the children attending the centre began exhibiting unusual behaviour, not wanting to go back to the nursery and displaying small bruises.
The marks were dismissed as minor mishaps however reports suggested the woman would lock the children in cupboards as a punishment, hold their noses so they would open their mouths to eat, leave them without breakfast and hit and shake them.
After numerous complaints from parents the woman was interviewed and arrested.
Testimonies are expected to continue to be submitted by the parents as the director awaits a hearing by the Judicial Authority.
