Caring Queen Letizia

Queen Letizia, seen by some of her subjects as uncaring, is working hard on a number of worthy causes in Mozambique and around the world, a new film contends.

When the television news presenter Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano married the heir to the Spanish throne in 2004 she entered a world of privilege and public scrutiny, unfortunately her fairy-tale has had it’s shares of ups and downs and her actions have been met with criticism on various occasions. She was quickly labelled as “cool and aloof”.

Matters came to a head last year when Letizia, 46, now queen, was involved in an unseemly ruffle with her mother-in-law, the former Queen Sofía, as they posed for photos in Mallorca. The images did not go down well with the public and a royal rebranding was called for.

That has begun with a 45-minute documentary by Julia Melchior, a German journalist who specialises in European monarchies. The documentary will be aired this Saturday (24th August) in Germany.

Melchior reflects on how spontaneous the queen can become when she is in smaller acts, where in Melchior’s opinion, Letizia is more herself, showing a caring nature and concerns that any mother may have for her children.
