Levels at La Viñuela reservoir soon to drop, triggering predictions of of drought-alert by July

THE Junta de Andalucia finally constituted the management committee of Cuencas de Malaga, responsible for the province’s water.
Originally created in 2015 but not activated, the 15 members provided an analysis of Malaga Province’s water reserves and the state of Malaga Province’s three systems.
Regarding Axarquia-La Viñuela, where the Junta recently lifted the 25 per cent reduction on the 2019-2020 allocation for irrigation, the committee warned that the reservoir would be on drought-alert after July.
According to estimates, the La Viñuela reservoir currently has reserves of 66.5 cubic hectometres following substantial rainfall between the end of March and during much of April.
Capacity will have dropped to 52.1 cubic hectometres in July and by the end of the water year on September 30, this will have fallen still further to 42 cubic hectometres, the management committee announced.
Prompted by these latest figures, the Asaja agricultural union has now called on Andalucia’s public administration to provide adequate infrastructure capable of solving Axarquia’s cyclical lack of irrigation water.
