MORAIRA HARBOUR: ZEC regulations affect fishing. United front in opposing. ZEC TEULADA-MORAIRA was joined by Benitachell in opposing aspects of Environment Ministry plans for the Marina Alta’s protected marine zone(ZEC). They are presenting a joint written appeal against a project already opposed by Denia and Javea, Teulada-Moraira town hall announced. “The ZEC project affects more than one municipality, which means this document should not be treated as an isolated case,” said Teulada-Moraira town hall’s Environment councillor Carlos Martinez. “That is why we have worked with Benitachell to reinforce and increase our objections. ”Like Benitachell,Teulada-Moraira belongs to the Marina Alta reserve but is also part of the area that surrounds Calpe’s Peñon de Ifach. One of the biggest worries for the Marina Alta’s coastal towns is the ban on ban traditional fishing methods where nets are in contact with the seabed in ZEC areas. Their joint appeal to the Ministry asks to have “a voice and vote” in future ZECs that affect both municipalities as well as the local businesses ands ocial groups in line with the EU’s Natura 2000 network.
