TEEN who shot police dog in an attempt to escape arrest jailed for 25 years

Jhamel Malik Paskel, 19, has been jailed for 25 years, sentenced to five years for shooting a police dog and an additional 20 years for five other charges including armed carjacking and kidnapping.

According to police, Paskel carjacked two women at a gas station on September 30, 2018, and then made one of them drive as he held her at gunpoint.

Following a 120mph chase on Interstate 10 near Cecil Commerce Parkway, Paskel leaped from the vehicle and ran, with the K-9, Fang, in pursuit. Police at the scene say that he shot the dog before running into nearby woods.

Paskel pleaded guilty in December last year to charges of armed robbery, kidnapping and the dog’s death. In court last week, he apologised for the crimes he committed when he was 17.

He said: “I would like to offer my apologies and condolences to Officer Herrera for not only the killing of his K-9 partner Fang, but his best friend.

“I want to apologise to the victims for scaring them that night. And I owe my mother the biggest apology for letting her down.”
