Arnold Schwarzenegger’s anti-war video wherein he told Russian troops he does not want them to be ‘broken’ like his father, trends on Russian social media sparking a reaction from viewers.

Schwarzenegger, who’s Austrian father was conscripted to fight for the Nazi’s in Germany made an impassioned plea not to make the same mistake his father dis, a mistake that haunted him for the rest of his life.

In the video he warns Russians that they are being fed misinformation about their country’s assault on Ukraine, addressing Russian President Vladimir Putin directly, he says: “You started this war, and you can stop it.”

His intervention has been praised by Russians opposed to the war in Ukraine, with opposition politician Lev Shlosberg saying it had been filmed “with respect towards us, Russian people.

“Arnold Schwarzenegger has a unique ability to talk to anyone with persuasion, respect and on equal terms. Wits, power and justice. Have a listen. Think about it. Understand.”

Liberal journalist Anton Orekh said his message contained no “Russophobia” adding that: “We are outcasts in the world.. Arnold is one of the few people who addressed Russians not as savage orcs, but as good people who have lost their ways.”

Schwarzenegger, one of the few accounts followed by the Kremlin’s official Russian language and English Twitter accounts, has seen his video viewed more than 25m times and had been retweeted more than 325,000 times.

The former California governor has a long history with Russia, being inspired as a youth by Russian Olympic weightlifter Yuri Vlasov and having made the first US film shot in Moscow’s Red Square (Red Heat). In the video he speaks of that relationship and his love for the people.

The intervention of people like Schwarzenegger, whose anti-war video has gone viral as it trends on social media, is important in getting the truth across to the Russian troops and people.
