As Spain considers banning smoking in vehicles, the Euro Weekly News readers shared their views on the matter.
The majority stated their approval of the ban on EWN Facebook page, with a difference of just two votes against the prohibition.
Edith Farminer argued in favour, highlighting that smoking doesn’t only cause distractions, but, “far worse, some just throw the burning buts out, what especially in the summer, might start fires.”
Diana Adams agreed: “It’s a distraction for the driver and very unpleasant for any passenger.”
Neville Henson confessed: “I used to smoke in the car until I dropped a cigarette and nearly knocked a lady over, looking for it. Now I never smoke in the car.”
But many opposed.
Gill Stevens declared: “Big brother taking over. Why does it matter if people have a cigarette in the car?”
Micky Moses Jones agreed that the ban would be too invasive: “As a smoker and having stopped smoking inside my vehicles 35 years ago, I cannot agree it should be banned. It should be a personal choice.”

Maybe if the driver is alone, it should be allowed, but if there is anyone else, adult or child, it should be illegal and carry a stiff fine. If I had to choose a ban or no ban, it would have to be a total ban. Many years ago, when I was a smoker, I flicked the ash out of the window, only to have the wind blow back the red-hot coal behind me onto my seat! Luckily, I wasn’t on a motorway or busy road, so was able to park up and put out the still-burning coal! Ruined my driver’s seat cover!!! Never again!
The driver should never smoke while driving, to say it’s dangerous is an understatement.
