French police officers pulled over an unexpected car after radar detection showed extreme speed on a routine country route.
Jaw-dropping speed reading leaves police amazed
Police officers were conducting checks on a country road restricted to 80 km/h when radar equipment suddenly registered 141 km/h from an approaching Citroen 2CV. Many would have expected a modern performance model, yet this iconic French car from decades past appeared instead. Social media users reacted quickly after CamRoute France shared details on Facebook, leading to widespread amusement mixed with concern over safety implications.
Modified old banger raises serious questions
Standard versions of this 2CV model might reach maximums around 115 km/h under ideal motorway conditions. Drivers in this case achieved far higher figures only through extensive mechanical changes that violated original safety specifications. Such alterations turned a vehicle built for simple and slow rural transport into something far more potent and unpredictable on public roads.
Most mechanics will talk about how brakes and suspension from that era would struggle to handle forces generated at such elevated velocities. Narrow lanes with potential hazards like bends or agricultural traffic increase risks by a lot during any high-speed drive.
Legal action follows immediate vehicle seizure
Gendarmes stopped the car several kilometres ahead and took possession of it straight away. They arranged towing to a local car pound while the police investigation continued. The occupants of the vehicle, a gentleman of 75 years and his companion (we assume his wife) of 71 years, now face major penalties for operating a vehicle with unapproved modifications plus additional counts related to putting other people at risk.
The incident goes to show how all cars, regardless of age, must comply fully with current regulations. French procedures in 2026 take into account the driver’s age, but core violations still hold significant weight in proceedings.
Context behind viral classic car incident
Comparisons arose to other unusual traffic cases involving older drivers in powerful machines, yet this combination stood apart due to the car’s humble origins. Modifications made without proper approvals can create hazards beyond simple speeding. Road conditions on such routes demand full attention and appropriate equipment at all times. But, while young boy racers are usually associated with this kind of careless vehicle modifications, senior citizens are not.
Safety lessons from unexpected high-speed event
Braking distances grow dramatically at 141 km/h, often exceeding 100 metres even in the most contemporary designs. Older systems in a transformed 2CV offer far less margin for error. Reaction periods mean vehicles cover considerable ground before any driver input takes effect, leaving little room for avoidance if obstacles appear.
Custom car fans sometimes adapt these old jalopies for controlled environments like tracks or events, including demolition derbies and rallies, yet public roads require strict adherence to standards, and the French police can come down heavy on drivers with cars that do not meet spec.
