With Mallorca welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors during the busiest weeks of the year, hoteliers are warning that a growing rubbish problem is damaging the island’s reputation just as the summer season reaches its peak.

The Playa de Palma Hoteliers Association (AHPP) has issued a strongly worded complaint over the build-up of overflowing bins and rubbish piling up in the Llucmajor section of El Arenal. The organisation says waste has been left on streets for days, creating unpleasant smells and unsanitary conditions during a period of high temperatures and heavy tourist footfall.

For an island where tourism is the backbone of the economy, the timing could hardly be worse. Mallorca is currently experiencing one of its busiest periods of the year, with hotels welcoming visitors from across Europe and public spaces under increasing pressure.

Hoteliers say promises have not been delivered

The association says it cannot understand why the situation has deteriorated after Llucmajor Town Hall recently announced an ambitious new contract designed to improve street cleaning and waste collection services.

AHPP president Pedro Marín described the situation as “incomprehensible and outrageous”, arguing that authorities had promised a lasting solution only for the same problems to reappear. According to the association, this is no longer an isolated incident but evidence of a wider failure in waste management.

The concerns extend beyond the hotel industry. Business owners, residents and other organisations operating in the resort are also said to have complained about overflowing containers, litter scattered around collection points and the impact the issue is having on one of Mallorca’s best-known holiday destinations.

A wider issue across Mallorca

The complaints in El Arenal come only a day after residents in Andratx criticised a new door-to-door rubbish collection system, claiming it has resulted in overflowing collection points and mounting waste beside the remaining communal bins. Residents there have also raised concerns about hygiene and public health.

The back-to-back complaints suggest waste management is becoming an increasingly sensitive issue in several parts of Mallorca during the summer season, when visitor numbers place extra strain on local services.

Reputation at stake

For hotels, the concern goes beyond appearance. Clean streets are an important part of the visitor experience, particularly in established resorts such as El Arenal, where tourism supports thousands of local jobs.

Industry leaders are now urging the local council to take immediate action before the situation worsens further. They argue that allowing rubbish to accumulate in public areas risks damaging Mallorca’s international image at a time when competition between Mediterranean holiday destinations remains fierce.

With temperatures expected to remain high and visitor numbers continuing to rise throughout July, pressure is mounting on local authorities to restore confidence and ensure one of the island’s busiest resorts is presented at its best.
