Cartagena neighbourhoods launch a month of traditional summer festivals

The month of August has come in full swing, and for the neighbourhoods and districts of Cartagena, the streets have been filled with a festive atmosphere and the parties have been non-stop as several areas in the municipality ring in their patron saint festivities. Festival associations have worked with the Cartagena City Council, as well as more local councils, to organise musical performances, sports and children’s activities, processions, competitions, food tastings, and social gatherings for all ages.

Local leaders join residents for official festival openings

The first weekend of the month marked the start of several celebrations, including in Perin, Canteras, and La Azohia. Municipal representatives joined the local communities to officially open the festivities. Councillor Francisca Martínez delivered the inaugural speeches in both Perín and La Azohía, while Councillor Belén Romero attended the opening in Islas Menores alongside guest speaker Alonso Gómez. Meanwhile, Councillor José Ramón Llorca joined residents in Canteras for their opening events.

Unique traditions and coastal celebrations take centre stage

These celebrations are due to continue until mid-August, filling the streets of Cartagena with weeks of sports, music, and traditional activities. In Perín, where festivities run through August 16, some of the highlights include the Lucero Trail Race, the quirky Donkey Day celebration, the traditional climb of Lucero to the bell tower, and solemn religious acts in honor of the Virgen de la Piedad. Coastal La Azohía also honors the Virgen de la Asunción with a rich two-week schedule.

Live music, competitions, and fireworks fill the August calendar

Islas Menores also has activities scheduled for most of the month, with family-friendly events, performances by the local group Aire de la Calle, and a fireworks display planned to close the festivities with a brilliant burst of colour and light. The fireworks show is expected to attract countless residents and visitors.

In Canteras, residents are enjoying a varied programme running until August 15 that mixes live music, athletic contests, and local customs. In addition to these, the Los Gallos festival is set to continue throughout August, with open-air dances, a family lottery, tastings, contests, a migas (a traditional dish) dinner, a domino tournament, and various musical and pyrotechnic shows.

Once more, in the municipality of Cartagena, the patron saint festivities have become one of the main meeting and social spaces of the summer, with traditions being kept alive, communities participating, and a fun way to ring in the summer in different towns, neighbourhoods, and districts in Cartagena.
