Almería warmly welcomed national hero and firefighter Jaime Domínguez at the weekend, when he passed through the province as part of his “Break the Silence” charity challenge, a powerful running campaign raising awareness about suicide prevention and mental health. 

The challenge is about more than just endurance, distance or sporting achievement. Its biggest accomplishment is in opening conversation around mental health, helping to remove the stigma that still surround suicide and emotional struggles.

Jaime Domínguez receives warm welcome in Almería capital

The firefighter arrived in Almería’s capital in style on Saturday, August 1, wearing the iconic red-and-white striped shirt of the province’s football team. There, he met with councillor Antonio Casimiro at the Monument of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, where the two discussed Domínguez’s intention to raise awareness and remove the stigma still surrounding mental health.

The meeting highlighted the importance of bringing together public figures, sporting communities and local residents to support conversations that can help save lives. Domínguez’s arrival in Almería formed part of a wider route through Spain, where he has been welcomed by people wanting to show their support for his message.

Local residents join ‘Break the Silence’ route from Villaricos to Mojácar

The following day, Domínguez headed to Mojácar, where he invited locals to join him in the next stage of his challenge: running 42 kilometres from Villaricos Castle to the Mojácar seafront.

The route became another opportunity for people to stand alongside the firefighter and show solidarity with the cause. With every person joining the challenge, the message behind “Break the Silence” grew stronger: mental health conversations should be open, honest and free from judgement.
