Pamis brings its patron saint celebrations to a memorable close with music, tradition and community spirit

The small Marina Alta village of Pamis has wrapped up another successful edition of its annual patron saint festivities, with hundreds of residents and visitors coming together for a weekend filled with tradition, entertainment and local pride.

Held between July 31 and August 2, the Sants de la Pedra celebrations once again transformed the village into a lively meeting point, combining religious customs with family-friendly activities, music and food. The event honoured Saints Abdón and Senén, the patron saints of agriculture, and highlighted the strong sense of community that continues to define village life in this corner of the Costa Blanca.

Three days of festivities

The celebrations began on Friday evening with one of the most popular traditions of the weekend: a communal dinner where neighbours gathered around long tables to share food and conversation. The relaxed atmosphere continued late into the night with live music and entertainment, giving locals and returning visitors the chance to reconnect.

Saturday’s programme shifted the focus towards families, with children’s water games providing welcome relief from the summer heat. A lively foam party followed, attracting youngsters eager to cool off while enjoying the holiday atmosphere.

One of the standout events of the weekend was the annual paella competition, which saw teams preparing their own versions of Spain’s most famous dish. Friends and families gathered to cook, taste and compare recipes, turning the event into a celebration of local gastronomy as well as friendly competition.

As evening arrived, the festivities continued with music and dancing, keeping the village buzzing well into the night.

Religious traditions remain at the heart

Although the weekend included plenty of entertainment, Sunday’s programme focused on the religious traditions that give the festival its deeper meaning.

Residents gathered for a solemn Mass in honour of the patron saints before taking part in a pilgrimage back to Pamis. Accompanied by music, the procession reflected centuries-old customs that continue to be passed from one generation to the next.

Later in the day, the celebrations reached their emotional conclusion with a colourful procession through the streets, followed by a fireworks display that lit up the evening sky.

A blessing of the surrounding farmland also took place, recognising the historic importance of agriculture to the area and paying tribute to Saints Abdón and Senén, who are traditionally regarded as protectors of crops and harvests.

The ceremony concluded with the installation of newly blessed images of the patron saints inside the village church, marking a significant moment for the local parish.

Strong community spirit

Following the weekend’s celebrations, Ondara’s councillor for Festivals and Traditions thanked everyone involved in organising the event, highlighting the commitment of volunteers, local associations and residents who helped make the festival another success.

He also praised the high level of participation throughout the three-day programme, saying the celebrations demonstrated the importance of preserving local customs while creating opportunities for neighbours and visitors to come together.

For many families, the Sants de la Pedra festivities remain one of the highlights of the summer calendar, offering a blend of heritage, food, music and friendship that continues to keep Pamis’ traditions alive year after year.
