It’s that time of year again, after the excesses of the summer that many fancy a good stretch of the legs under the stars while helping people who need it most? Benalmadena’s sixth Caminata Solidaria (charity walk), put on by Asociación Luna Llena, begins at 8pm, Friday, August 28, on Ruta 1 heading up to Cañada del Lobo mountain path backing onto the town.

Bring what you can spare for a good cause

Walkers are invited to turn up with non-perishable food and clothes they no longer need. Everything collected goes straight to El Vuelo de las Libélulas, the local group that supports vulnerable families across Benalmadena with food parcels, clothing and practical help.

This year’s event also has pro T-shirts on sale for €20. Every euro from those sales heads to Asociación ABAD to help fund their new day centre for people with disabilities, a project that will give many local families a proper base close to home.

More than just a walk – stars, tunes and a bit of fun

Once you’re on the trail, there’s plenty to keep things lively. Telescopes will be set up for a spot of stargazing, a DJ will spin some tracks, and there are raffles to enter. Every participant gets a drink and some fruit to keep them going.

Previous events have drawn solid turnouts of locals and expats who fancy combining a bit of exercise with a concrete way to help out. The evening is open to anyone who wants to join in – just bring your donation and a pair of decent walking shoes. Toni Torres García, from the organisation says, “On the way up to Santangelo Norte past the cemetery, you’ll see at the crossroads on the right… There will be group of wonderful walkers who attend.”

Why it matters on the Costa del Sol

Local groups like El Vuelo de las Libélulas and ABAD rely on this kind of community effort to keep their work ticking over. Whether you’re a regular on the hills around Benalmadena or simply fancy a sociable night out that does some good, this is a straightforward way to pitch in. There’s no need to sign up previously, just
