Locals thrilled as Mijas hands out record €800,000 in grants to sports clubs, but which ones will receive the funding

Thirteen local sports clubs across Mijas have received a share of €800,000 in grants, the largest sum ever distributed by the town hall to support grassroots sport in the area.

Record funding lands as new season kicks off

Mayor Ana Mata welcomed representatives from the thirteen beneficiary clubs in Las Lagunas on Wednesday, September 16, handing over grants for the 2025 season once each club had submitted its paperwork. This is the first year the funding has arrived right as the new season starts, rather than months later, giving clubs earlier access to cash they badly need. More than 3,200 local athletes are served by the thirteen recipient clubs, according to town hall figures.

Something for nearly every sport in Mijas

Football, handball, basketball and swimming clubs all feature among the recipients, as do chess, badminton, fishing, fencing and racquet sports groups. Named beneficiaries are:

– Club Deportivo Raquetas de Mijas (racquet sports)
– Club de Balonmano San Francisco de Asís Mijas (handball)
– Club Deportivo Mijas (multi-sport)
– Club Deportivo La Cala de Mijas (multi-sport)
– Club Deportivo Mijas Unión Basket (basketball)
– Cándor Club de Fútbol (football)
– Club Polideportivo Mijas Las Lagunas (multi-sport)

Grants were awarded through a competitive process in line with Spain’s Subsidy Law, with money reaching clubs once documentation had been completed and verified.

Where the money goes

Federation fees, transport for players and coaches, meals and accommodation costs are all covered by the scheme, as is staffing and the purchase, hire or repair of equipment. Medical services, physiotherapy, pharmacy costs, insurance, administration, facility hire and trophies also fall within eligible spending categories.

“Supporting our sports clubs means investing in our town”, Mata told representatives gathered at the event, framing sport as a tool for education, integration and social cohesion. Figures have climbed year on year: the previous round, covering 2024, benefited twelve clubs sharing €734,317 between them.

Families with children in local clubs will likely welcome the increase, given how far grant money stretches when it comes to covering training kit, away-fixture travel and the everyday running costs clubs face throughout the season.

Locals give the funding boost a warm welcome

News of the payout drew a strong response from residents and club supporters online. “These clubs deserve every bit of support and recognition,” one commenter wrote, while another called it proof that “sport in Mijas has never received this much funding before.”

Praise wasn’t limited to the clubs themselves. Several people credited the council directly, with one describing the announcement as “management, hard work and commitment to sport in Mijas,” and another linking the funding boost to a broader message: “supporting sport means building a better society.”
