Free Mar Menor boat tours launched in San Javier

The San Javier Tourism Department has launched a programme of free guided tours of the Mar Menor, scheduled throughout October, November, and one day in December. The first tour, which launched in late September, saw great success, with all one hundred available slots filled for the one and a half hour ride.

During the tour, a guide explained over the vessel’s PA system the history of the San Javier General Air and Space Academy, a famed military centre in which Leonor, Princess of Asturias, carried out much of her military training. As the journey continued to the centre of Europe’s largest saltwater lagoon, the guide continued explaining interesting facts about the surrounding natural features, as well as the history of La Manga.

The tour crossed the Estacio bridge and returned to the Mar Menor towards the area of ​​the fish weirs, the ancient fishing art, where the guests learned about the fascinating historical heritage of this maritime culture.

San Javier puts the Mar Menor in the spotlight

The tours were launched as a municipal initiative to raise awareness about the Mar Menor and its natural and historical heritage. It is also part of a plan to reduce the seasonality of the area, and attract residents and visitors to its famous shores year-round.

These tours are set to be repeated on Fridays, on October 2 and 16, November 6 and 20, and December 4.
