Real estate has traditionally been seen as a male-dominated industry for many decades. In recent years, however, there has been a significant shift towards greater gender diversity and inclusion in the field.

Women are increasingly entering and triumphing in real estate, defying the notion that it is solely a ‘man’s world.’ The same can be said for Hanna Lehto and her journey into real estate on the Costa del Sol, Spain, challenging the norms and excelling in her field.

With dreams of being a lawyer, Hanna Lehto studied at law school before realising her true passion was in real estate, flipping properties, and interior design. She took the brave steps to become a legalised real estate agent in Finland before making the move to Spain where her real estate agency, Asunto del Sol, has become one of the most trusted and well-respected agencies on the prestigious Costa del Sol.

This combination of Hanna’s experience and knowledge of law combined with her extensive training and understanding of real estate in Spain puts her in a unique position. Hanna knows all the intricacies of buying a new property and how to navigate all of the complex legalities and documents required when buying a new home. We sat down with Hanna to discuss her interesting journey from a Finnish lawyer to Costa del Sol living.

The Euro Weekly News spoke to Hanna about her journey into Spanish real estate, her background in law, and what motivated her to become a successful female real estate agent on the Costa del Sol.

Hi Hanna! What did your journey into real estate in Spain look like?

I had a dream… My childhood dream was to become a lawyer. Yes, I must have been a strange child. I never dreamt of being a vet or a hairdresser like the rest of the girls did. So, I went to law school and graduated in my field.
With the degree in my hand, I started to think about what lawyers actually do. And I realised I don’t want to do that (too much sitting in an office)- I wanted to do something more fun.

Why real estate?

I had always been interested in real estate. My secret hobby was to check apartments for sale on the internet and think about how I would decorate or renovate them. So, as I had fulfilled my dream of being a lawyer, I now had a new dream of being a real estate agent.

I worked for a small real estate company for a couple of months and passed the realtor exam (LKV – legalised real estate agent – FIN). Then I worked for Finland’s biggest real estate company for two years. So I got the experience from a very small agency as well as from a very big agency. I decided that I preferred working for a small agency. So I dreamt of creating my own…

How did you create your own real estate agency?

At this point, I was 28 years old and had established my own agency in Turku, Finland. The law degree helped since, at that time, the real estate business was for men over 50 years of age. Without the credibility brought by the law degree, I might not have succeeded as well as I did, as this was proof that I was capable to enter into the world of real estate and that I was to be taken seriously.

With my own company, I got to do things my way. I staged the apartments I had for sale, at a time when nobody else was doing this or providing this service. Nobody else was using a professional photographer like I was, and everything was going really well for me.

Tell us about your journey from Finland to Real Estate Agent on the Costa del Sol.

I enjoy a challenge, and I felt like there were no challenges anymore. Don’t get me wrong, as a family we did a lot of things that challenged us for a while. We built a summer house mostly by ourselves with the help of my father on an island where there is no electricity, and we bought apartments to renovate as an investment – just to mention a few.

I was 34 and my life was perfect! I had a loving husband, two adorable kids, a beautiful home, and my own agency which was doing great. So the dream we had called the ‘perfect life in Finland’ was fulfilled. Time for new dreams!

New challenges were needed for me! So I got an idea, why don’t we sell everything we own and move to Spain?! That would be a nice challenge to start from zero, and we could establish a real estate company in Spain and learn to speak Spanish. So that’s exactly what we did!

And here we are! Aquí Estamos!
