Almuñecar town hall backs initiative for improved dog beach

Local dog owners could soon see a much better spot to walk their pets after councillors in Almuñecar unanimously agreed to explore upgrades and new locations for the town’s dog beach.

What sparked the unanimous vote

Councillors came together on Tuesday, July 28, to unanimously back a proposal aimed at giving local dogs and their owners a proper spot to enjoy the sea. Behind the vote lies years of frustration from residents who say the area’s only designated dog beach is barely fit for purpose.

Left-wing party Izquierda Unida (IU) put forward the motion, pointing to complaints from families who use La Veintiuna, the small cove currently set aside for dogs in Almuñecar. Covered largely in loose stones, with steps forming the only route down and no proper access to the water, the beach has long drawn criticism from pet owners who worry about their animals cutting their paws or struggling on the rocks.

Government representatives and opposition members responded with sympathy to those concerns during the debate. Agreement was reached to set up a cross-party working group tasked with either upgrading the existing site or scouting fresh locations along the coastline.

Campaigners want action without delay

Arturo Gonzalez, IU’s group secretary, praised the constructive atmosphere in the chamber and the willingness shown by rival parties to cooperate. His party now wants the working group convened swiftly, arguing that hundreds of families and their pets have waited long enough for a solution.Calling the unanimous vote a breakthrough for the town, Gonzalez said the focus must now shift to getting work underway so dog owners can finally enjoy the coast in decent conditions.

Bigger ambitions for a dog-friendly resort

IU sees the agreement as a chance for Almuñecar and neighbouring La Herradura to gain a reputation as a genuinely dog-friendly destination. Animal welfare campaigners in the area have pushed for years for better facilities, noting that plenty of coastal space exists even if suitable access does not. No timeline has yet been set for when the working group will first meet, nor which upgrades or alternative locations are under consideration, but its a step in the right direction.
