Axarquia villages nearly full this August as rural stays prove hot ticket for Spanish holidaymakers

Both Spanish and foreign visitors are beginning to pack out rural holiday homes across inland Axarquia this August, leaving many small villages close to full and giving local businesses a long-awaited and welcome lift.

Data from the holiday booking website Ruralidays.com has reported via Malaga press, has puts average bookings for rural properties in the Malaga province above 87 per cent. Demand from all over Spain has climbed around 30 per cent compared with summer 2025, helping push many of the most beautiful Axarquia spots to almost full.

Almachar is leading the pack at the moment at 95 per cent occupancy, followed by Arenas at 94 per cent, Sayalonga and El Borge both at 93 per cent, Frigiliana at 92 per cent, Competa at 89 per cent and Periana at 88 per cent. El Borge, Almachar, Competa, Sayalonga and Velez-Malaga rank among the province’s strongest performers for inland rural bookings. The results of this study indicate that many families are starting to swap their ideals of the beach life for one of more serenity and tradition.

Extra visitors swell the temporary population in these quieter spots. Restaurants, shops and tourism-linked businesses see more custom as people explore the area’s agricultural landscapes, local traditions and heritage sites.

Mountains and local flavour draw the crowds

Competa acts as a natural gateway to the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama, offering mountain scenery, nature walks, regional food and a break from busier coastal resorts. Guests are choosing stays further inland for peace and authentic Andalucian village life rather than crowded beaches.

This pattern strengthens smaller Axarquia communities as solid summer alternatives. Rural tourism injects money straight into local economies through longer stays and everyday spending, keeping traditional villages lively through the peak holiday period.
