New Costa del Sol bus link makes Madrid and Barcelona high-speed trains easier to reach

A new bus connection is giving people in the Costa del Sol and Gibraltar easier access to Spain’s high-speed rail network, with passengers able to travel to Malaga Maria Zambrano and continue by train to destinations including Madrid and Barcelona.

Renfe and bus operator Avanza have joined forces to expand their Tren+Bus service, creating new links between the Campo de Gibraltar and several cities in northeastern Spain.

Bus connection links Gibraltar and Algeciras with high-speed rail

Passengers travelling from Algeciras or Gibraltar and La Linea can now buy a combined ticket covering the bus journey to Malaga and the onward train journey. Barcelona, Camp de Tarragona, Lleida and Zaragoza have been added to the available destinations, with the connection taking place in Malaga.

Having one ticket for the complete journey means travellers do not have to arrange separate bus and train bookings. Renfe says the system is designed to make longer journeys easier to plan for people living in areas without a direct rail connection.

For Costa del Sol residents, Malaga Maria Zambrano is already a key departure point for high-speed trains. Renfe operates AVE and other long-distance services from the station to cities across Spain.

Gibraltar to Barcelona takes just over 10 hours

One of the new routes links Gibraltar with Barcelona, with one service available in each direction every day. The average journey time from Gibraltar to Barcelona is 10 hours and 14 minutes, according to Renfe. Travelling from Algeciras to Barcelona takes an average of 10 hours and 50 minutes, also with one connection in each direction every day.

Long-distance journeys can therefore be made without having to drive across Spain or organise separate transport for the different parts of the trip. Barcelona is not the only option. Travellers can also reach Camp de Tarragona, Lleida and Zaragoza through the combined bus and train service. Renfe already operates high-speed services from Malaga to destinations further north, including Camp de Tarragona.

More ways to travel from the Campo de Gibraltar

The latest expansion follows the introduction of additional Tren+Bus services between the Campo de Gibraltar, Madrid and Granada in June. Current services provide 12 daily frequencies between the Campo de Gibraltar and Madrid in both directions, while six daily connections operate with Granada, according to the latest Renfe announcement.

Rail services from the Campo de Gibraltar have been affected by temporary restrictions linked to works being carried out by infrastructure manager Adif. The combined bus-and-train arrangement provides another way for passengers to connect with the wider Spanish rail network. Renfe and Avanza have worked together on combined travel services since 2013, including connections from Marbella and Estepona to Madrid via Malaga.

One ticket covers the complete journey

Combined Tren+Bus tickets are sold through Renfe’s usual sales channels, including its website, ticket offices and travel agencies. Renfe Tren+Bus booking and travel information.

Renfe doesn’t publish a fixed fare for the new Gibraltar to Barcelona Tren+Bus journey. Its rules say the combined price is calculated by adding the applicable train fare to the bus fare, so it varies according to the train ticket and booking conditions.

As a rough guide, we can expect around €60 to €100 one way from Gibraltar to Barcelona, with cheaper fares potentially available if booked early and more expensive fares at busier times. That is an estimate rather than a confirmed fare.

For British expats and other international residents living on the Costa del Sol, the new connections could make longer trips by rail easier to organise, particularly for journeys where driving hundreds of kilometres is not attractive.

The expanded service means passengers starting their journey in Gibraltar or the Campo de Gibraltar can now reach Malaga by bus before continuing by high-speed train towards some of Spain’s biggest cities.
