Estepona has taken centre stage in international diplomacy this week after hosting a major gathering between the town hall and the Consular Corps of Málaga, reinforcing its growing reputation as a hub for global cooperation.
The event brought together representatives from nearly 30 countries with consular presence in the province, marking one of the largest diplomatic meetings of its kind ever held in Andalucía. The occasion also coincided with the 63rd anniversary of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations and 40 years since Spain joined the European Union.
Estepona positioned as a leader in international cooperation
Opening the event, Mayor José María García Urbano highlighted Estepona’s long-standing identity as a meeting point of cultures and civilisations. He emphasised the town’s commitment to openness and diversity, noting that residents from 135 nationalities now make up almost a third of the local population.
He underlined how this multicultural environment has helped shape a community that is both rooted in tradition and outward-looking. According to the mayor, events like this strengthen collaboration and create new opportunities for shared international projects that benefit both residents and partner nations.
The growing importance of consular diplomacy
Speakers at the event stressed the increasing relevance of consular work in today’s complex global climate. José Luis Ramos, Dean of the Consular Corps of Málaga, described consulates as vital spaces for dialogue, cooperation, and peaceful engagement.
He pointed to rising geopolitical tensions and global challenges, noting that diplomacy must not only respond to conflicts but actively work to prevent them. Consular representatives, he said, play a crucial role in connecting global decisions with their local impact, ensuring citizens are supported and represented.
Fausto Martínez, Vice-Dean for the Costa del Sol and Honorary Consul of Latvia, also praised the collaboration with Estepona, highlighting the essential role consuls play in representing and supporting thousands of foreign residents across the province.
400 years of consular history showcased in Estepona
Alongside the summit, Estepona is hosting a public exhibition celebrating nearly four centuries of consular history in Málaga. Located along Calle Terraza, the open-air display traces the origins of consular presence back to 1641, when a commercial treaty between Denmark and Spain paved the way for the first consulate.
The exhibition features 25 large panels detailing the history and functions of the 50 consulates currently operating in the province. Visitors can explore their role in fostering trade, cultural exchange, scientific collaboration, and protecting foreign citizens living in Spain.
The display also highlights key historical milestones and diplomatic relationships between Spain and other nations, offering a unique insight into the evolution of international relations on the Costa del Sol.
Estepona honours the Consular Corps with new public space
In recognition of the Consular Corps’ contribution, Estepona’s council has officially named a public space in their honour. The newly designated roundabout, located near the town hall and central park, serves as a permanent tribute to the work carried out by consulates in supporting communities and strengthening international ties.
This symbolic gesture reflects the town’s appreciation for the diplomatic network that plays a vital role in both local life and global cooperation.
A milestone moment for Málaga’s international presence
The event marks a significant milestone not only for Estepona but for the wider Málaga province. With its strong international community and expanding global connections, the region continues to position itself as a key player in diplomacy, cultural exchange, and economic collaboration.
As global challenges evolve, gatherings like this underline the importance of dialogue, cooperation, and shared understanding in building a more connected and resilient future.
